Hill Law Firm Accident and Injury Lawyers is currently accepting cases involving patients who have been injured after undergoing CoolSculpting procedures.
CoolSculpting (medically known as cryolipolysis) has gained popularity in recent years as a way to get rid of “stubborn fat” in certain areas of the body. The procedure was first approved in 2010 by the FDA, however, it has come to light that the procedure may have a detrimental side effect known as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH). PAH may cause extreme enlargement of fat tissues in the area from which they were removed and can leave patients permanently disfigured.
Hill Law Firm Accident and Injury Lawyers have the experience to help victims of CoolSculpting get the compensation they deserve for their medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages, and more. If you or a loved one suffered from permanent disfigurement as a result of PAH (paradoxical adipose hyperplasia) after undergoing a CoolSculpting procedure, we can help. At Hill Law Firm, we handle all CoolSculpting cases on a contingency fee basis and offer a free confidential case evaluation. Call us today at (210) 465-3561 to get started.

What Is CoolSculpting?
CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure that reduces fat in targeted areas. It works by freezing fat cells, causing them to crystalize and ultimately die. The body then naturally eliminates the dead fat cells over time, revealing results after 1-3 months.
Unfortunately, while CoolSculpting is a non-invasive treatment, it can have some severe adverse effects. Patients that experience the adverse effects may see fat deposits show up at the site of treatment, this is known as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH).
What Is PAH?
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) occurs when the number of fat cells in the treatment area increases rather than decreases. This fat growth shows up as hard, lumpy fat deposits that appear at the site of CoolSculpting treatment 8-24 weeks after the initial treatment. PAH can cause serious disfigurement, and does not go away with diet, exercise, or additional CoolSculpting treatments, and may also cause an increase in weight gain. The only known cause of PAH is CoolSculpting, and the most effective treatment is corrective plastic surgery, although it is not always successful.
Who Is At Risk of PAH?
Research suggests that individuals may be more likely to experience PAH if:
- The treatment was administered to the abdominal area
- A large handpiece was used for the CoolSculpting treatment
- They are male
- They are of Hispanic descent
Other genetic factors may play a role as well.
Who Makes CoolSculpting Products?
Originally, CoolSculpting products were manufactured by Zeltiq Aesthetics. Zeltiq was founded in 2005 and went public in 2011 after raising $75 million in funding. The CoolSculpting procedure hit the market in 2010, and by January 2012, there had been over 150,000 CoolSculpting procedures conducted. In February 2017 Zeltiq was acquired by Allergan (a company owned by Abbvie), which is a pharmaceutical company that acquires, manufactures, and develops pharmaceuticals and medical devices.
Legal Options For Those Affected
If you have been affected by PAH after receiving CoolSculpting treatment, you may be eligible to take legal action. These cases may be handled as part of a mass tort litigation rather than as a class action. Mass Tort cases are civil action cases that involve many plaintiffs who are alleging the same claim against one or more corporate defendants, usually centered around pharmaceutical drugs, failed medical devices, and defective consumer or agricultural products. Mass tort cases are similar to the average personal injury claim, in that each plaintiff is treated as an individual.
Class action suits are generally much larger than mass tort claims, with more plaintiffs, but all cases are combined into one. Usually, all plaintiffs of a class action suffer from a similar injury. Due to the much larger size of class action suits, there are usually more legal teams involved, however because of the large size, the payout is usually significantly smaller.
What Damages Can I Receive In A Mass Tort Claim?
If you are a part of the CoolSculpting Mass Tort Claim, suing Zeltiq for failure to warn after developing PAH, you may be eligible to receive compensation for:
- Medical expenses
- Pain and suffering
- Lost wages
