Greyhound Bus Wreck Injures Many: Almost 50 Hurt
When you travel by bus, you are trusting someone else to get you to your destination within a certain period of time, and safely. But riding in any sort of vehicle on the highway entails some risk, and sometimes the bus doesn’t get to its destination, and the passengers get injured or killed as a result.
Last week, a Greyhound bus full of passengers was headed from New York City to Cleveland, but it didn’t make its destination, and a number of passengers were injured, when the bus smashed into a tractor-trailer on Interstate 80 in central Pennsylvania. In all, one woman was killed and four were critically injured, while at least 40 others, including the driver of the bus, were transported to local hospitals. The driver, 42-year-old Sabrina Anderson, was one of those in critical condition. She had been driving for Greyhound for more than 12 years.
According to Pennsylvania State Police in Milton, the bus was traveling west on the Interstate at about 1:30 a.m., when it rear ended a flatbed trailer that was hauling garbage. According to the driver of the tractor-trailer, who was uninjured in the crash, he was driving the speed limit when the bus suddenly smashed into him. The section of Interstate 80 where the accident occurred was shut down for about 15 hours, while police and other officials investigated to try to figure out what occurred.
There are many questions to be answered in an accident like this, such as the main one; why did it happen? While it’s easy to blame the bus driver, there may have been other factors at play, including the speed and the mechanical condition of the tractor-trailer. For example, did it have working tail lights? It’s also possible one or both vehicles were mechanically faulty, and hadn’t been inspected recently.
Accidents involving buses are often avoidable, if the driver is operating the vehicle safely. But sometimes, things happen, and in this case, dozens of people who were just interested in getting to Cleveland have seen their lives turned upside down. The outcome of the investigation of this accident will determine who is responsible for compensating those who have been injured or killed.
