San Antonio Drunk Driving Crash

Two Fatalities in San Antonio Drunk Driving Crash

A driver faces charges after a crash in Northeast Bexar County that resulted in two fatalities. The car crash happened at around noon last Saturday on Loop 1604 between Schuwirth Road and FM 1346. The suspect, later identified as 49-year-old Justin Fey, was later taken into custody before charging him with two counts of intoxication manslaughter, two counts of intoxication assault and one charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened when the Chevrolet Suburban driven by Fey crashed into a Ford F-150 pickup truck head-on after he crossed into the opposite lane as he was attempting to pass another vehicle. The Sheriff’s Office report noted that one man and one woman who were driving in the truck were pronounced dead just moments after the crash and that three children who were also riding in the truck were injured. Two of the children were transported by ambulance to University Hospital, while the third was flown there by AirLife. All three are expected to survive. Fey suffered only minor injuries in the wreck.

Texas has earned a reputation over the years as one of the most dangerous states in the country to drive and San Antonio is also earning a reputation for being one of the worst places to drive in Texas. In a recent ranking, Texas was the fourth worst state for driving in the country, largely on the strength of the tendency on the part of too many Texas drivers to get behind the wheel when they have had a few drinks. Texas ranks sixth in the country when it comes to dunk driving fatalities.

When someone gets behind the wheel after having a few drinks, they have chosen to put themselves and everyone else on the road at risk. That includes a lot of innocent families, including children, who may just be trying to get home. While the drunk driver is responsible for the accident, what many people fail to realize is that, based on the circumstances, many others may have been negligent as part of that process. Based on what are called dram shop laws, the bartender who served the driver too much alcohol or someone else who may have been in a position to stop him from getting behind the wheel at some point may also be found negligent.

In all cases like this, a thorough investigation must be conducted, with a large number of factors having to be taken into consideration. The children who survived this terrible accident may have injuries that change their lives in some way and, while the identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed, there is a good possibility that they will not have one or both parents to come home to. These families should not have to bear the costs of a drunk driving crash alone.
