Company Issues Another Texas Ground Beef Recall
The problems with ground beef produced in Texas continue, and it has led to another Texas ground beef recall. Over the weekend, according to a press release by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Corpus Christi-based Sam Kane Beef Processors issued a huge recall of more than 45 tons of its ground beef products because of reports that some of the beef may have been contaminated with metal shards.
The discovery of the contamination came from at least four complaints by consumers about finding pieces of metal – including some as large as 3 millimeters in size – in their product.
The beef products were shipped to H-E-B retail stores throughout Texas is . They were produced between Sept. 9, 2014 and Sept. 18, 2014, and feature is sell-by dates between Sept. 29, 2014 and Oct. 8, 2014.
H-E-B released a statement of their own, wherein they noted that only some of the beef carried in their stores came from Sam Kane Beef Processors, and that their other ground beef products were quite safe. They also took the time to note that there have been no illnesses or injuries reported that were linked to the tainted beef.
The following products are subject to recall, which is being referred to as “precautionary”:
- H-E-B Ground Chuck in regular and value packs. This product features clear film packages in Styrofoam trays, and is marked, “80% LEAN 20% FAT.” This product has a use-by date between September 11 and September 29, 2014;
- H-E-B Ground Chuck Patties in regular and value packs. This product also comes in clear film packages in Styrofoam trays. These are also marked, “80% LEAN 20% FAT.” These packages have a use-by date between September 11 and September 29, 2014;
- 3 lb. packages of H-E-B Ground Chuck bearing an establishment number 337 and marked with a use-by date of October 2, 2014;
- 5 lb. and 10 lb. packages of H-E-B Ground Beef, marked “73% LEAN 27% FAT,” bearing establishment number 337 with a use-by date of October 5 or October 8, 2014.
This recall follows two Texas beef recalls that were announced last week. In one, Hereford-based Caviness Beef Packers recalled more than 23,000 pounds of beef trimmings because of possible contamination with E. coli. In the other, Kane Beef Processors recalled a little more than 2600 pounds of ground beef that it believed had been contaminated with pieces of blue plastic which was believed to be a rubber glove.
