Keurig Coffee Makers Recalled Because of Possible Burn Hazard
If you are planning to give a loved one a coffee brewer for Christmas, you might want to make sure the model you’re buying is safe. Coffee maker manufacturer Keurig Green Mountain has issued a voluntary recall for more than 7 million of its iconic coffee makers in the United States and Canada because they seem to be making the water a little too hot.
According to a press release from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announcing the recall, the company is recalling the machines because of concerns that the water can overheat during the brewing process. That overheating can result in water and steam spraying out of the coffee makers and possibly burning consumers. Keurig claims it has so far received more than 200 reports of water and steam escaping from their brewers, with 90 victims claiming they had suffered burn-related injuries as a result.
Included in the recall are Keurig® MINI Plus Brewing System model number K10. (They were identified in earlier years as model number B31.) The brewers are marked with a serial number beginning with the number 31, and that serial number is located on a white sticker on the bottom of the machine. The machines come in a variety of colors, with silver trim. They are about 11 inches tall, they have a “Brew” button, three cup size brewing options and they are equipped with a removable drip tray. The brewer’s water tank is located on top, near the back.
In all, approximately 6.6 million coffee makers sold in the U.S. and 564,000 sold in Canada are subject to the recall. They were manufactured in China and Malaysia between December 2009 and July 2014, and sold for around $100 at a number of retailers, including Kohl’s, Kmart, Walmart and Target, as well as from the Keurig website.
Consumers who have these coffee makers are being asked to contact Keurig Green Mountain toll-free at (844) 255-7886 or via their website to arrange for a free repair. In the meantime, while they await the repair, Keurig is also advising consumers of steps they can take to avoid a burn injury.
