Organic Seed Mix Recalled for Possible Salmonella Contamination
Sometimes, trying to eat healthy foods is harder than it sounds, because some foods meant to be healthy for you are sometimes contaminated with unhealty bacteria. The latest example of this problem comes courtesy of San Jose, Caifornia-based Freeland Foods Inc., after they issued a voluntary recall of their Go Raw Organic Spicy Seed Mix throughout the United States because the mix may have been contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.
This action follows a similar recall in Canada about a week ago. It seems the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) conducted tests on a random sampling of the seed mix, and found that some tested positive for the bacteria. The only lot affected by this recall is the Go Raw Brand Organic Spicy Seed Mix sold in 1 lb. (454 g) re-sealable plastic bags. The packages are marked with UPC number 8 59888 00040 0, and are also marked with, “Enjoy before May 12, 2015 R2.” These products were sold at hundreds of retailers throughout the United States, including Texas.
Salmonella is one of the most common foodborne illnesses in the United States. While many experience little more than gastrointestinal discomfort for a few days. However, it can also cause far more serious infections, especially for small children, the elderly and those in less than perfect health.
Among the most common symptoms of Salmonella infection can include nausea, severe diarrhea sometimes leading to dehydration and vomiting, as well as flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills and body aches. Occasionally, a Salmonella infection can get into the bloodstream and produce such symptoms as aneurysms, endocarditis and arthritis. Symptoms can begin to show up anywhere from eight to 72 hours after infection, and they will often sick around for anywhere from a few days to a few months.
Thus far, there have been no reported illnesses linked to this product. Freeland Foods has simply decided to take these steps “out of an abundance of caution,” to safeguard the public and insure the integrity of its organic products. They are instructing consumers who have purchased this product to either destroy it or return it to the original store for a full refund.
